12/05/25 - a late review of a minecraft movie
if you've been on the internet at all recently, you have most likely heard about the whole minecraft movie thing. a minecraft movie even existing in the first place has been an internet in-joke for so long that i wasn't believing the news of a minecraft movie starring jack black being in the works. it sounded like another crazy rumor, but when i saw the trailer minutes after it released, i thought to myself "eh, it looks alright" then i mostly forgot about it. that was until april this year when i was reconnceting with some old friends and i thought i could go see it with them. my friends were also the ones to make me aware of the memes around the movie that i had missed due to not being up to date on modern memes since i don't use apps like tiktok. so with the knowledge in brain and my friends by my side, i went to go see movie in cinemas. and i got to see it twice thanks for scheduling shenanigans causing one of my friends to not be able to come the first time.
after seeing it twice i can say that as a social exprience with pals, the minecraft movie is the most fun i've had watching a movie. looking back it, i'm not sure what made steve saying the certain lines was so funny. maybe it was a 'zoo wee mama' situation where it was funny for not particular reason. or maybe all the hype drummed up around it made things funny. but the thing that matters is that i had a really fun time watching the movie and joking around with friends. during my second watching, i decided for the extra joke factor to bring a 3DS and record the reactions to all the big moments, which i've edited into a short little vlog (just be warned; it is a little loud, we were quite hyped up after all. i guess the hype around the jokes brought a whole different vivi out of her shell XD). while i enjoyed the time with my friends for the first screening of the film, i feel like the exprience was made even better by the crowd going wild and all joining on the joke during my second time in the cinema. as much as all of this was very goofy, there was a very high sense of enegry in the room which had me smiling the whole way through the film. i'm also happy that after hearing horror stories of people throwing around their pop-corn, no one in my cinema did both times i went. i think joke stops being funny when you start inconviencing the people working at the cinema, so i'm glad that didn't happen to the employees of my loacl one.
so that was my exprience watching the minecraft movie twice. although, that isn't the end of what i have to say about it. since then i've had it cooking in my brain pot and i think i've come to the conclusion that as an actual movie, detached from all the memes and irony, it is...alright. while the movie wasn't anything special, i wasn't getting the feeling of wanting to the leave the cinema. nothing too bad, nothing too special. i do think some aspects of the movie were weak though. like for example; the movie has a theme of creativity, which already feels a bit ironic with this being a big hollywood movie based on a very popular video game, but also doesn't have a whole lot done with it. yeah sure, henry is meant to be a creative character but that is only really used twice in the movie, heck his whole character arc as well as his sister and dawn feel sidelined for most of the movie until they become important again so the audience can focus on steve and garret's wacky road trip adventure. speaking of which, i didn't really find much reason to root or care for the characters. steve is just a guy, garret just kinda sucks, and the other three don't really do a whole lot besides being there and helping out. the only real reason i cared about steve and garret is because i took the jokes people made about steve and garret getting together as serious and was little disappointed with the lack of yaoi by the end. i feel this movie could of used the theme it had and the setting of the minecraft world to tell a great story, but it sorta fell flat and feels like a movie where stuff happens and jack black has to explain a lot of it for those who haven't played minecraft.
before i wrap up this review, i wanna add one last thing. since it took me awhile before i sat down to write this up, a bunch of things happened in that time, including the announcment and screenings of a special "meme along, sing along" version of the minecraft movie. this appears to be the exact same as the regular movie, except with a timer that appears for the meme lines and songs, as well as what to say/sing on screen in big green text. and i like to think this is the real punchline of all of this joking around. because in the one clip of these screenings being spread around online, there is not a single person in the cinema except for the person recording. it is well known when a corpration tries to get in on a meme, it dies instantly, and not only did warner brothers show up near the end of the meme's life span, but they missed the point of the joke making fun of their movie and burried the meme with one final nail in the coffin. which i think, in of itself, is a bit funny.
with all that said, i recommend if you're going to watch the film, get a couple of friends to tag along, and have yourselves a laugh and don't take it too seriously. if you go in expecting a touching tribute to the video game minecraft, you will probably be disapointed. that's all for now, thanks for reading! stay silly, stay safe, stay strong!
